About Mumble

Mumble is a free, open source, low latency, high quality voice chat application.

Mumble was the first VoIP application to establish true low latency voice communication over a decade ago. But low latency and gaming are not the only use cases it shines in.

Mumble is split into two applications: Mumble for the client and Murmur for the server component. Both of them run on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. Mumble has very low latency combined with good sound quality; it uses Speex extensively, not just the voice compression technology, but also the voice preprocessing to remove noise and improve clarity. We heard from users who record podcasts with our multi-channel audio recorder, players seeking realism with our positional audio in games, Eve Online players with huge communities of over 100 simultaneous voice participants (I bet they make good use of our extensive permission system 😄), the competitive Team Fortress 2 community making us their required voice communication platform, hobby radio transmission users, and a variety of workplaces adapting Mumble to fit their needs - be it on-head mobile devices or communicating across countries or into airplanes.

Administrators appreciate Mumble for being able to self host and have control over data security and privacy. Some make use of the extensive permission system for complex scenarios (for example separating two groups but leaders being able to talk to both). Some love to provide their users with additional functionality with scripts making use of server APIs, or host music bots and the like that connect to the server. Those that have an existing user database often make use of authenticators to allow authenticating with existing account login data.

We provide downloads for the official client and server programs. A Linux distribution may provide their own packages and have their own maintainer, which we will describe below. We also link to some third party projects.

Version 1.3.2 is the latest stable version of Mumble and was released on July 08, 2020.

Note (macOS): Apple introduced a stricter verification and warning process. macOS will now warn you when installing the Mumble application. This is expected and not a security issue. Apple will not currently verify and acknowledge our package unless we pay a significant amount of money. (Issue tracked in #4263)

Server note: Depending on the context and packager our server program is called “mumble-server” or “Murmur”

Your distribution probably provides official packages for Mumble. Please refer to your OS packages. Distributions with official packages include Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, openSUSE, Arch Linux, Mandriva/ROSA/Unity.

Ubuntu provides their own packages. But we also provide a PPA (Personal Package Archive) which you can add to use more recent stable or development snapshot versions.

We do not currently provide an official Android client. However, you can use one of the third party clients (that we do not develop or support ourselves).

Development snapshots

Development snapshots contain unreleased features and changes that will eventually be available in the next stable release. Please report any problems you encounter on our issue tracker.

At the moment we are in the process of changing our build infrastructure for releases. Our next snapshots will be based on the new system. Until the new system is established we are not publishing development snapshots (using the old system).

Source Code

As a free software project the source code is publicly readable and under a permissive license.

Our Mumble project source code is hosted on GitHub as mumble. The iOS app as mumble-iphoneos.
