A new Leopard feature called Stacks is similar to placing papers related to each other in the same pile on your desk. Stacks are a collection of files organized by theme, and you can create your own stacks or use two premade Stacks that Apple has provided:

A Stack for your documents.
A Stack for files you download, such as saved Mail attachments, file transfers through iChat, and files captured from the Internet with the Safari browser.

To add your own stack, drag the folder from the Finder or desktop to the right of the dock’s dashed line and to the left of the Trash. (The Stacks icon appears to the right of the dashed divider on the Dock.)

To view the contents of a Stack, click the Stacks icon. It immediately opens in one of two ways:

Icons for the files, along with their names, fan out in an arc. The most recent file is at the bottom of the fan.
Files and names appear as a grid.

By default, the fan or grid decision is determined automatically by the number of files in a Stack. So while the fan view is more attractive, a grid lets you peek at many more icons at once. However, both views have their storage limits. You can’t display, for example, hundreds of documents in a grid or a fan. So you’ll see an icon that says 598 More in Finder or whatever the actual sum is. Clicking the More in Finder icon takes you to the Finder.

You can dictate whether Stacks spring out as a fan or grid. Right-click, or Control-click the Stacks icon in the Dock to instantly bring up the Stack’s contextual menu. Or hold down the left mouse button for just a second until the menu appears. From the menu, choose Fan, Grid, List, or Automatic. You can also sort the Stacks icons by name, date added, date modified, date created, or kind of file.

The Dock doesn't literally have the folders, e.g., the Download folder. Instead it contains 'aliases' (a.k.a, 'pointers', or 'shortcuts') to the real folders, which reside elsewhere on your computer.

In the case of the Downloads folder, this is located at the base level of your Home folder. Avs file converter. Probably your Home folder can be found in the sidebar of a Finder window. You can also get there by pressing command-shift-h while you are in Finder.

Once you get to your Home folder, you should see the Downloads folder. Drag it to the right side of the Dock and drop it in there. This recreates the alias that was inadvertently destroyed. You will notice that the Downloads folder is still in your home folder.
